Sean Penn Ditches Sandra Bullock Backstage; Forest Whitaker Comes …

We already knew that he went a little off-book while presenting Best Actress last night, but Sean Penn’s odd behavior continued afterward, according to USA Today’s entertaining backstage wrap-up. “Sean, what do I do now?” winner Sandra Bullock pleaded. Penn, reportedly, shrugged and replied, “I don’t know.”

“Well, I don’t know either,” Bullock protested, only to have Penn ditch her while she watched Best Director on the backstage monitors. Luckily, knight-in-shining-armor Forest Whitaker rode to the rescue, gently telling Bullock that she could remain backstage, head to the press room, or return to her seat. The two shared In-N-Out jokes while, presumably, Penn left. Did he feel someone else deserved Best Actress, like Gabby Sidibe or his ex-wife? is he just absent-minded? or is he a Bitch No. 26?

DEATHS

Racist – not just politically incorrect

They won’t contain themselves. No matter how much John McCain asks his party and fellow conservatives to tone down the racial rhetoric, they will not be able to stop themselves. the idea of a black man beating their Republican candidate for the presidency will be too much to bear for the party of the Southern Strategy.

This summer the GOP Bigot Eruptions are going to go nuclear.

Cue the knuckle-dragging Geoff Davis:

Congressman Geoff Davis, took the criticisms of Mr. Obama a few steps further, likening the change slogan to the pitch of a “snake oil salesman.” he then relayed to the audience that he had taken party in a “highly classified, national security simulation” with Obama.

“I’m going to tell you something: That boy’s finger does not need to be on the button,” Mr. Davis said. “He could not make a decision in that simulation that related to a nuclear threat to this country.”

Once the “boy” remarks began to circulate on the Internet, the Obama campaign moved swiftly to criticize them. “It’s hard to tell what is more outrageous – Representative Davis’s condescending and personal attack, or his absurd and offensive claim that Barack Obama is not prepared to defend America. Geoff Davis may hide behind offensive tough talk, but he has marched in lock-step with Bush-McCain policies that have devastated our national security, while Barack Obama has stood up against a misguided war in Iraq and worked with respected Republicans like Dick Lugar and Chuck Hagel to secure loose weapons and nuclear materials from terrorists,” Bill Burton, the campaign spokesman said.

Davis later issued an “apology” but it’s a load of crap. he said what was in his heart and in the hearts of many on the right.

Embrace the racist inside, Republicans!

MORE: Pam Spaulding has more.

UPDATE: If you want to know why this sort of thing is going to be an ongoing problem for McCain and the GOP as Obama moves up to officially become the nominee look no further than the comments on conservative blogs QandO and Rick Moran. both McQ and Moran know that this is really really stupid but at least one of their commenters simply cannot see the problem with calling a grown ass black professional man, let alone one as accomplished as Sen. Obama, a “boy”. They simply chalk it up to “political correctness”.

What’s next? some con calls Obama a n****r and they shrug their shoulders and say “What’s the big deal?” I wouldn’t bet against it.

US Iraq commander likes ‘Hurt Locker’

Updated: 17:57, Wednesday March 10, 2010

The commander of US troops in Iraq has praised Oscar-winning film The hurt Locker, saying that unlike some media coverage it showed the complexities on the field.

General Ray Odierno said he watched The hurt Locker, a nerve-jangling film about a US Army bomb disposal squad in Baghdad, after a copy was sent to him last year.

‘What I like about it is it shows first the camaraderie that is required here — the tension, the risk that’s involved in some of the jobs that we do here,’ Odierno told the PBS Newshour on US public television.

‘I’m sure many people would say it could be a bit more accurate in some areas, but I believe it’s a good representation of the sacrifice, dedication that it takes here,’ he said from Baghdad.

But Odierno indicated that he was no easy movie critic, saying he was sometimes disappointed with films as well as media coverage of US operations in Iraq.

‘I think people don’t understand how complex the environment has been here over the last several years,’ Odierno said. ‘I don’t think they understand what it takes for these young men and women to operate in this environment.’

‘They have done extremely well balancing non-violence and violence, having to be able to determine who’s bad and who’s good, who’s trying to kill you, who’s not,’ he said.

The hurt Locker scooped six Academy Awards on Sunday including best picture and best director for Kathryn Bigelow, the first woman to win the honour.

101 ESPN/Post: Center fielder Willie Davis found dead in his home

LOS ANGELES (The associated Press) – by SUE MANNING

Willie Davis, a speedy center fielder who collected two World Series rings, three Gold Gloves and was a two-time All-Star during his 14 seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, has died. he was 69.

“He was beloved by generations of Dodger fans and remains one of the most talented players ever to wear the Dodger uniform. having spent time with him over the past six years, I know how proud he was to have been a Dodger. he will surely be missed and our sincere thoughts are with his children during this difficult time,” Dodgers owner Frank McCourt said in a statement.

Davis was found dead Tuesday in his Burbank home, police said, adding that they did not believe foul play was involved.

Davis’ teammates included Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, Johnny Roseboro, Junior Gilliam and Maury Wills. he won his World Series rings in 1963 and 1965.

“He was the only person I’ve ever seen score on a fly ball from second base when he did it in Vero Beach. Willie running the bases was one of the best. he was exciting. he was a very proud man and a good man. he was a good ballplayer,” Dodgers coach Manny Mota said at spring training in Glendale, Ariz.

The Dodgers lost the 1966 World Series 4-0 to the Baltimore Orioles. in Game 2, in the last game of Koufax’s pitching career, Davis committed a Fall Classic-record three errors in one inning when he lost one fly ball in the sun, dropped the next one, then overthrew third base.

During the 1965 World Series, Davis stole three bases in one inning, including one where he had to crawl into second base after stumbling and falling.

Davis left the Dodgers in 1973 and went on to play for the Montreal Expos, Texas Rangers, St. Louis Cardinals, San Diego Padres and California Angels.

He retired after the 1979 season with a career .279 average and 398 stolen bases.

“Willie was always such a young man in my eyes because of how he was able to move so easily. Time gets away from you quickly. You hope you take advantage of it and you hope you appreciate every day you’re here. You just hope he’s in a better place,” Dodgers manager Joe Torre said.

“When that guy came into the league, he put fear in everybody _ outfielders, pitchers, infielders, everybody. with all the fights we had and problems we had with the Dodgers, he was always a guy you’d have a word or two with: ‘How you doing? how you hitting?’” former San Francisco Giants right fielder Felipe Alou said in Scottsdale, Ariz., where the Giants were playing the White Sox in a spring training game.

“I’m surprised,” Alou said. “Wow. he was a great player. he was one of those exciting players with many triples and doubles. I had friends on the Dodgers, which was unusual. he was one of them.”

Alou recalls a game at Dodger Stadium when Davis hit a hard single over first base that Alou chased down and threw to second and threw him out.

“I saw the umpire call him out and I said, ‘I finally got that guy trying to stretch a single into a double.’ The next day I saw the newspaper and it said Willie Davis had a double. I said, ‘I threw him out.’ my teammate said: ‘We tagged him out. he had passed second.’ he was that fast.”

In 1996, Davis was arrested for allegedly threatening his parents with a samurai sword and ninja-style throwing stars, saying he would burn their house down if they didn’t give him $5,000. Prosecutors eventually decided not to file charges.

His mother said it wasn’t the first time he wanted money and she had given it to him in the past. Davis had become a Buddhist more than 30 years earlier, and in the six months before the attack, had started carrying the sword and a dagger that he wore in a holster, his mother said.

The Dodgers wanted to help Davis, former Dodger pitcher Don Newcombe said in 1996, and got permission from then-owner Peter O’Malley to do everything they could.

“But if you perceive that a person has some kind of problem, you can’t give him money to enhance the problem,” Newcombe said. “The Dodgers are too smart for that. we wish it was that easy, but it doesn’t work that way. we would not give him money if we thought that he was going to use it for something other than a good use.”

“If we could define the problem, Willie would go to a doctor of our choosing,” Newcombe said. “Then we could have a medical diagnosis and a medical opinion about what his needs are. then if that diagnosis was that he had a substance abuse problem, we’d put him in the hospital and we’d treat him for as long as he needed to be treated. The ball is in his court now. Willie’s going to have to make a decision about what he’s going to have to do with the rest of his life.”

Former Dodgers general manager Buzzie Bavasi once said of Davis: “There was nothing more exciting than to watch Willie run out a triple. … he could have been a Hall of Famer, but he had million-dollar legs and a 10-cent head.”

Hall of Famer Willie McCovey of the Giants said Tuesday: “There was a time he kind of went off and I’m not sure what (he did). he was living a weird existence for a while. but he had straightened himself out. This is shocking. a lot of guys from my era are passing on, let’s face it.”

Mota said the trouble Davis had toward the end of his life “was kind of sad to see it happen. but he was a great man. I have a great deal of respect and admiration for Willie.”

Davis was born in Mineral Springs, Ark., in 1940 and moved to Los Angeles with his family when he was still a boy. he attended Roosevelt High School where he was a world class sprinter.

He was recruited by the Dodgers and signed with them when he graduated in 1958, McCourt said. Two years later, he was in the majors. in 1961, he replaced Duke Snider in center field.

Davis still holds six team records. he is the franchise leader in hits (2,091), extra-base hits (585), at-bats (7,495), runs (1,004), triples (110) and total bases (3,094).

He set a team record in 1969 with a 31-game hitting streak. he had more than 20 stolen bases in 11 consecutive seasons.

He appeared in a few television shows, including “The Flying Nun” and “Mister Ed,” usually as himself.

ABC wants to disable FF on DVRs

ABC has held discussions on the use of technology that would disable the fast-forward button on DVRs, according to ABC President of Advertising Sales Mike Shaw, with the primary goal to allow TV commercials to run as intended.

“I would love it if the MSOs, during the deployment of the new DVRs they’re putting out there, would disable the fast-forward [button],” Shaw said.

While MSOs risk losing some of their DVR customers if fast-forwarding were blocked, Shaw said the cable operators–who are beefing up their own local ad sales operations–”are in the same business we’re in.” “They’ve got to sell ads too,” he said. “So if everybody’s skipping everybody’s ads, that’s not a long-term business model for them either.”

Shaw also threw cold water on the idea that neutering the fast-forward option would result in a consumer backlash. He suggested that consumers prefer DVRs for their ability to facilitate on-demand viewing and not ad-zapping–and consumers might warm to the idea that anytime viewing brings with it a tradeoff in the form of unavoidable commercial viewing.

“I’m not so sure that the whole issue really is one of commercial avoidance,” Shaw said. “It really is a matter of convenience–so you don’t miss your favorite show. and quite frankly, we’re just training a new generation of viewers to skip commercials because they can. I’m not sure that the driving reason to get a DVR in the first place is just to skip commercials. I don’t fundamentally believe that. People can understand in order to have convenience and on-demand (options), that you can’t skip commercials.”

Shaw said it’s crucial for ABC and networks to hold these discussions with MSOs while DVR penetration is still in its early stages. DVRs are at around 10 percent of U.S. TV households. “It’s in our interest and the MSOs’ interest to figure out something that works for the two of us,” he said.

The frequently outspoken Shaw made his comments Wednesday in a post-upfront interview where he offered up another round of no-nonsense commentary.

Looking back on the protracted upfront, Shaw said he was surprised that competitors at CBS and Fox were so quick to fold the tent and accept buyers’ refusals to pay for increased ratings generated from DVR viewing. Shaw had argued earlier in the spring that the ratings jumps–which have reached double-digit percentages for top shows–had value, and he intended to charge for them. He continued that position early in the upfront until it became clear the two other networks weren’t willing to hold the line, and had agreed to negotiate on “live” ratings only.

“I’m sure they told their upper management in their two companies why it wasn’t a good idea for them to do so,” Shaw said. “They and their management must have decided that the same thing we thought was important wasn’t important.”

Shaw said if he knew he’d be the lone proponent for negotiating on time-shifted ratings, he might have changed course. “Obviously, going back to last February, if I knew nobody else on the entire sell-side of the equation was going to open their mouths besides us, I don’t know if we would have gone down the same track,” he said.

some research executives–even at networks with sales departments that acted differently–had argued before the upfront that ads viewed in fast-forward mode generated value for advertisers, since consumers were at least partly exposed to their messages. but Shaw said ABC was only interested in finding a way to receive compensation for un-skipped ads.

ABC’s upscale audience, coupled with a strong performance in “A” counties and in leading markets, made his network a must-buy. “If you were looking for those attributes, with the programming on ABC that we deliver, are you going to move those dollars to CBS?” he said. “It doesn’t make sense.”

no shrinking violet, Shaw is the only sales chief at a major network to speak to the media as part of an upfront postmortem.

as questions fade about whether to negotiate solely on DVR ratings, Shaw said ABC will move aggressively to make deals based on Nielsen’s new “commercial ratings,” set to be unveiled at the start of the new season. He said ABC was interested in possibly using them as a currency in this upfront, but buyers felt implementing the logistics in such an abbreviated time period wasn’t feasible. “We were too late in bringing that to the market for practical reasons,” Shaw said. but, he added, “it’s going to transform how people buy and plan television.”

but Shaw said ABC executives will be fanning out to agencies and advertisers over the next two weeks to present an analysis of commercial ratings data from the last six months, which presents ABC in a favorable light. He added that some scatter business may be written based on the new ratings.

Jihad Jane : Charged with plotting terror in South Asia

By Arun Kumar, Washington, March 10 : An American woman, nicknamed as ‘Jihad Jane’ and ‘Fatima LaRose,’ has been indicted for conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists to wage violent jihad in South Asia and Europe.

Colleen LaRose, 46, who was arrested in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Oct 15, has also been charged with making false statements to a government official and attempted identity theft, the Justice Department announced Tuesday.

No arraignment date has been set for LaRose, who is being held at the Federal Detention Centre in Philadelphia, according to the US Attorney’s Office.

LaRose and five unindicted co-conspirators recruited men on the internet “to wage violent jihad in South Asia and Europe, and recruited women on the internet who had passports and the ability to travel to and around Europe in support of violent jihad,” according to a Justice Department statement. It was not clear immediately if India was on their terror radar.

If convicted, LaRose faces a possible life prison sentence and a USD 1 million fine, the statement said.

CNN cited a US government official familiar with the case as saying LaRose was successful in recruiting some people to join the cause and was able to raise money. she was in contact with committed jihadists in South Asia, Western Europe and Eastern Europe, the official said. he declined to link her to any specific terrorist organizations.

The conspiracy began in June 2008, when LaRose posted a comment on YouTube under the username JihadJane saying she is “desperate to do something somehow to help” Muslims, according to the indictment unsealed Tuesday.

From December 2008 to October 2009, LaRose engaged in electronic communication with the five co-conspirators about their shared desires to wage jihad and become martyrs, according to the indictment.

LaRose and the co-conspirators, according to the statement, used the Internet to establish relationships with each another and develop plans “which included martyring themselves, soliciting funds for terrorists, soliciting passports and avoiding travel restrictions (through the collection of passports and through marriage) in order to wage violent jihad.”

The indictment against LaRose, “underscores the evolving nature of the threat we face,” said David Kris, assistant attorney general for the national security division.

Michael L. Levy, the US attorney in Philadelphia, said the case “demonstrates the very real danger lurking on the Internet” and “shatters any lingering thought that we can spot a terrorist based on appearance.”
